LANSING, Mich. (Oct. 1, 2026) — Today, Sen. Chedrick Greene (D-Saginaw) voted to finalize bicameral, bipartisan bills that will improve the management of dams in Michigan and better protect families, homes, and communities.

As Michigan’s roughly 2,600 dams continue to age, they pose a threat of dangerous flooding. Together, Senate Bill 947 and House Bill 5485 will ensure that dams statewide get the repairs, updates, and oversight they need.

“Midland County residents know all too well the need for this legislation after the Edenville Dam failure in 2020, and we have since seen those same risks in other places around the state,” said Sen. Greene. “Across both chambers and party lines, I am proud that lawmakers were able to come together to address this urgent and important issue and better protect our people and our communities.”

These bills amend the Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act to significantly strengthen regulatory requirements for dams in the state. This will include registering all dams, increasing inspection frequency, and improving design requirements. Under the legislation, dam owners will also be required to maintain and update emergency, safety, and security plans.
