Backing from Giffords PAC, Michigan Dems LGBT&A Caucus, and Michigan Association for Justice demonstrates the Marine Veteran’s growing appeal in final days before February 3 special primary

SAGINAW – Today, Chedrick Greene announced endorsements from Giffords PAC, the prominent national gun violence prevention organization led by Congresswoman Gabby Giffords; the Michigan Democratic LGBT & Allies Caucus; and the Michigan Association of Justice. The public backing from these notable progressive groups are evidence of Greene’s broadening appeal in his bid to win Democrats’ special election primary for Michigan Senate District 35.

In response, (Ret.) Sergeant Major Greene said: “I’m honored to have these frontline fighters for safety and justice join our coalition and support our efforts to deliver a safer and more equitable future for Michiganders. Defending our freedoms and protecting people— all people— have driven my Marine and Firefighter service. That will not change when I’m State Senator.”

Lending their voice to the Greene campaign’s closing argument to voters before the February 3rd Election Day, endorsers praised the Marine Veteran and Fire Captain’s commitment to protecting mid-Michiganders’ safety and freedoms:

Congresswoman Gabby Giffords: “Chedrick Greene is the leader that Michiganders need in Lansing. As a gun owner with decades of experience serving his community, he understands the issues facing Michigan families and will fight hard for commonsense measures to keep them safe. I am proud to endorse his bid for the Michigan State Senate. We’ve achieved so much across Michigan in recent years, and with the fate of our gun safety majority on the line in this special election, it’s critical Chedrick Greene is elected.”

Jerron Totten, Chair, Michigan Democratic Party LGBT & Allies Caucus: “With three decades of Marine and firefighter service to back it up, Chedrick is a leader fiercely committed to protecting the safety and freedoms of every American— priorities we share with him. We believe Chedrick Greene is uniquely suited for this moment and pivotal district. We are excited to stand with him, and encourage our members and allies to help his fight to make sure ‘liberty and justice for all’ means all.”

Nick Andrews, President, Michigan Association for Justice: “The Michigan Association for Justice is proud to endorse Chedrick Greene in the upcoming State Senate District 35 special election. We trust he’ll be a strong partner in fighting for the vulnerable and advancing a fair justice system for all.”

These latest endorsements add to an already robust and diverse list of supporters for the first-time candidate including Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet and State Representative Amos O’Neal— the most prominent mid-Michigan Democrats currently in office.

Greene is also the only candidate, in either special election primary, to have earned labor’s public vote of confidence to represent Michigan’s 35th State Senate District. He has been endorsed by 13 labor unions to date. Greene is also supported by local leaders from every county in the district. The campaign to fill Congresswoman McDonald Rivet’s open seat in Michigan’s 35th Senate district – with six Democrats and four Republicans vying for their parties’ respective nominations – will draw statewide and national attention. With Michigan Democrats currently holding a 19-18 majority, the race will determine the balance of power in the state Senate. A swing seat in a swing state, this special election outcome will be an early bellwether of the political mood ahead of the November 2026 elections.

Born and raised in Saginaw, Sergeant Major (Ret.) Chedrick Greene is a decorated, 30-year Veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, 31-year union member, and currently serves as Fire Captain in his 27th year with the City of Saginaw Fire Department. He recently worked as District Assistant for the 35th Senate District office, representing then state Senator McDonald Rivet and serving as a liaison with constituents. In March 2023, Governor Gretchen Whitmer appointed Greene to serve a two-year term on the Statewide Housing Partnership under the Michigan State Housing Development Authority.

The primary and general special election dates for the 35th District of the Michigan Senate are February 3, 2026 and May 5, 2026.
